Black Medical Scientific Network

Working together to raise the Visibility of Black and ethnic minority scientists in Research that will one day lead to breakthroughs of novel therapies, technologies or both.

Why We Started

To raise the awareness of how it feels to be the only black scientist in the room.

“In 100 years of the Nobel Laureates No black scientist has ever won a Nobel” (Professor Winston Morgan, University of East London, Conversation 2018) – this is due to:

  • Lack of visibility
  • Not enough black students progressing to study science post graduate level
  • Increased Barriers to funding for scientific research carried out by black and ethnic minority scientist

Our Solution

Our Vision

To inspire the next generation of scientist in the black community that will one day be the next Nobel Laureate.

Our Mission

We want to see an increased representation of black scientist in all scientific discipline across all levels to ensure that all black students achieve their academic potential.

Recognition

We will endeavor to find opportunities that show case the work of black scientist on a local, national and global level.

Network

We will want to increase the representation of black and ethnic minority scientist at scientific conferences and create opportunities to meet with other black and ethnic minority scientist that foster and champion collaborative partnership.

Role Models

Every BMSN member is  seen as a ‘role model’ and ‘mentor’ to the next generation and we want all members to be active role models and be visible in their local communities because by being visible we can break down barriers due to lack of representation.

Engagement

We will engage with schools, collages, institutions to ensure that we can educate the next generation about careers in research and tackle barriers that hinder funding opportunities.

Equip the next generation

We will support and create access for young and aspiring professionals for an internship, work experience, and increased funding opportunities.

Positive growth. What the issue is? The facts.

All Parliamentary Group (APPG) established in 2018 which aims to promote the inclusion and progression of marginalized people in STEM and encourage government, parliamentarians, academics, businesses, and other stakeholders to work towards a STEM sector that is representative of the UK population provided the following key findings in 2021:What the issue is? The facts

  • STEM workforce is less diverse than the wider workforce
  • Government needs to take multi prolonged approach to drive equity in the STEM workforce
  • Intersectional barriers continue from STEM education into workforce
  • Awareness of structural inequity in some large STEM organizations but no consensus of solution
  • The pandemic had a significant detrimental effect on driving inequity in STEM
  • No black scientist were featured in the Covid19 frontline new updates despite black African men being 2.4 times were likely to die from Covid
  • Vaccine uptake was also reported lower in the black community due to lack of physical role models and lack of trust in the government
